The Leaf Thief Speech Therapy Game | Fall Book Companion for Mixed Groups
ONE GAME. DIFFERENT SPEECH GOALS. WAY LESS MIXED-GROUP CHAOS.
You read the story. Your students loved it. Now you need something that keeps the theme going while still letting one student practice articulation, another answer language questions, and another work on functional communication.
Watch Out for the Leaf Thief! is a printable fall speech therapy game inspired by The Leaf Thief. Students work to fill their trees with leaves, but wind cards can send their leaves flying back to the windy pile before they reach the finish.
The game provides one shared activity while allowing the communication task to change for each student, making it especially useful for mixed speech and language groups.
HOW THE GAME WORKS
Students practice a communication target, draw an action card, and follow the card to add or move leaves. The first player to fill a 6-leaf tree wins.
Need something simpler? Use the included 3-space tree.
Want less competition? Use the cooperative version and work together to fill one shared tree before the cards run out.

Suggestions for adapting the game for mixed groups
The built-in Leaf Detective cards even turn a game move into a describing activity as students describe a leaf without naming its color and have a partner identify it.
Students may speak, point, gesture, or use AAC during play. The activity is designed so the communication goal can be individualized without changing the basic game rules for everyone else.
This is a great choice for fall speech therapy, literacy-based speech therapy, mixed groups, articulation practice, language therapy, pragmatic language, and book companion activities.
Please note: The book The Leaf Thief is not included. The game is connected to the book's fall and wind theme but includes pretend game events rather than functioning as a direct retelling of the story.
