Spring Describing Wheels | Speech Therapy Activity for Describing & Expressive Language

Struggling to get your students to say more than one-word answers?
These Spring Describing Wheels make it easy for students to expand their language, add details, and build stronger sentences using structured, visual support.

Make describing easy, engaging, and effective this spring with these interactive describing wheels and vocabulary cards, perfect for speech therapy, RTI, and language intervention groups.

This hands-on resource supports expressive language development by breaking describing down into clear, visual categories like color, size, action, group, and more. With multiple describing wheels and spring-themed vocabulary, students get the structure they need to expand utterances, answer WH questions, and build complete sentences.

Why You Need This Resource:

  • Builds describing and expressive language skills in a structured, visual way

  • Perfect for speech therapy sessions, RTI groups, and classroom centers

  • Low-prep and easy to use – print, cut, and go

  • Supports students who need help adding details, forming sentences, and organizing language

  • Engaging, hands-on format that increases participation and carryover

What’s Included:

  • 3 Different Describing Wheels targeting key describing attributes (color, size, category, action, emotions, and more)

  • Spring vocabulary cards (number of cards varies by set) for repeated practice and generalization

  • Print-and-go format for easy implementation in speech therapy or classroom settings

How to Use (My Student-Favorite Game!)

Flip & Tell (Student Favorite!)
Place vocabulary cards face down in a pile. Students take turns flipping over a card and placing it in the middle. Using the describing wheel, they describe the item by stating 2–3 attributes (such as color, size, or category).

If they successfully describe it, they keep the card. The student with the most cards at the end wins!

This simple game naturally targets:

  • Expressive language and sentence expansion

  • Describing using multiple attributes

  • Turn-taking and engagement

  • Functional communication and carryover

Skills Targeted:

  • Describing and identifying attributes (color, size, shape, function, category, etc.)

  • Expressive language and vocabulary development

  • Sentence expansion and use of complete thoughts

  • WH question support and comprehension

  • Categorization and semantic organization

  • Social communication through structured interaction

Perfect For:

  • Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs)

  • Special Education Teachers

  • RTI / MTSS intervention groups

  • Early elementary classrooms

  • AAC users and students with language delays

Why It Works:

Describing can feel overwhelming for students when it is too open-ended. These describing wheels provide clear visual supports and structure, helping students organize their language and confidently use more words, add details, and communicate effectively.
